Motivation Mondays: Thinking Positively

Motivation Mondays: Thinking Positively

About three years ago when I was a senior in high school, my mother signed me up for a fitness class and believe me, as a 16 year-old getting ready for prom and graduation, it was the last thing I wanted to do. My thoughts about the class were negative and I would say things like “There’s no way I’ll lose any weight,” or “I should just give up.” The results from my first couple weigh ins were greatly affected by this attitude as the scale showed that I didn’t lose any pounds. Soon, my mother sat me down and told me that I needed to think more positively about myself. Even though I had low self-esteem, there were always ways to boost my spirits up and one of those ways was to think about the good things in life. With this in mind, I returned to the fitness class telling myself that “I could do it.” I began to enjoy working out with the others and four months later, I lost 45 pounds.

The point of this little story is to show how the smallest thoughts can shape our mood. We’re pretty tough critics on ourselves, especially when it relates to body image. No matter how good our clothes look, if we think our hips are too wide or our arms are too flabby, we’re going to have a bad time. As the quote for today says, “The body achieves what the mind believes.” If you want to start building up more self-esteem in everything you do and wear, your mind needs to be open and optimistic. I didn’t start losing weight until I told myself that I could achieve that goal and stopped thinking that it was a lost cause. If you think more confidently about yourself, then it will show through your body. Instead of being bogged down with harsh words, lift yourself up by looking on the bright side. For example, if you put on an evening dress ready to hit the town, don’t tell yourself that it looks bad and you’ll never be able to pull it off. Instead, say that your dress matches perfectly with your shoes and purse. Say that you can’t wait to live it up with your friends and that it’s going to be a fun night. Thinking more positively helps you build a clear outlook on life and you’ll be amazed at how far you can go once you set your mind to it.

Stay positive and thanks for reading!!
