REAL WEDDING | Sci-Fi Geek Chic Texas Wedding | Taylor Elizabeth Photography

I swear I think today’s wedding is one of the most unique weddings I’ve seen but I must say it shows their personalities perfectly!! From the star wars vans, to the amazing fairy flower girls, to the light sabers for the couples exit. I think the photographer describes it to a tee….

Geek Chic!! Melissa and Gaylon love Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, and Star Wars. They incorporated these details in a classic and elegant manner that helped their personalities shine through on their beautiful wedding day! They chose Ashton Villa, a historical manor house on Galveston Island. It was the perfect venue for them bringing out a timeless vintage element to their wedding aesthetic.

Melissa & Gaylon

How did the two of you meet? We met online on the dating website OkCupid! We would have never crossed paths if not for that website! We started messaging on there, then texting almost 24/7 then finally found a chance to meet. We’ve been together ever since! Describe your engagement: After Gaylon surprised me after one of his gig’s with the proposal, I started planning our wedding immediately. I got the fall engagement pictures I’d always wanted and a year to plan our dream wedding! Personal or handmade details: In my bouquet I had my father’s mother’s brooch, my mother’s mother’s necklace, a handkerchief that belonged to my great grandmother that my mother also carried down the aisle on her wedding day, and a string of pearls from my mother-in-law’s grandmother. I made many of the wooden decor signs with the help of my parents. My dad cut the wood and I nailed them together then mom helped me paint them. Our guitar “guestbook” and custom guitar picks for guest favors. Our matching Star Wars Vans shoes My mom and I made the flower fairy girls dresses (lots of love and glitter! so much glitter!). I had originally wanted fairy outfits but had bought dresses instead, the flower girls outgrew them before the wedding so I ended up getting my fairies after all! Lots of handmade items from Etsy: garter, table names/signs, Mr & Mrs chair banners, toasting flutes, Thank You sign, cake topper, etc Lots of Star Wars and geek references throughout the wedding decor, wedding cakes (Star Wars cake topper on bride’s cake, 3D Pikachu on groom’s cake along with Halo and Star Wars decor) and even our ceremony! Our officiant threw in multiple geek references throughout our ceremony including “May the Force be with you” at the end. Describe your wedding flowers: Hand-tied bouquet with white and purple hydrangeas, cool water roses, purple dahlia, purple wax flowers, lemon leaf and succulents Memories and Stories about the Day: It rained, well poured on our wedding day, but it’s Gaylon’s favorite weather and our venue, thankfully was indoors! The rain let up for me and my bridal party to get to the venue, and for us to get some family pictures! The best man had one of the BEST speeches EVER! Everyone was in tears laughing so hard at the end of his speech! Everyone still talks about how awesome it was. Dancing with our moms- Gaylon had danced with his mom then I surprised my mom and we had our own mother-daughter dance together to Martina McBride’s “In My Daughter’s Eyes”. Not many dry eyes in the room! Singing and worshiping during our wedding ceremony with our guests I loved having my mom and best friend Ashley, who’s like my sister (I’m an only child), help me into my wedding dress. Our glow stick exit!! So fun! Everyone loved participating and the pictures turned out AMAZING! Our bridal party had lightsabers to hold up. Our getaway car was full of balloons and had eye stickers everywhere. Getting out to our hotel and to the airport we lost so many balloons! We kept finding the eye stickers everywhere for weeks and weeks. Your first dance song: “Pistol” by Dustin Kensrue- this song Gaylon picked very early on in our dating life to be our first date song, it’s unique song that really sums us up and perfect for us that day and always The thing that we would have done differently is? Wish we would have picked a Saturday evening or moved the time up on our Sunday ceremony. Our ceremony started at 5 pm and since it was a Sunday evening and most guests drove 30 minutes to an hour to arrive, many people started leaving after dinner and didn’t stay for all the celebrating and dancing afterwards. Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Seeing each other for the first time during the ceremony, that priceless reaction, the amazing love we had for each other.
Your advice for other plus size brides: Your wedding can be all that you dreamed and more! Don’t be afraid to get creative and explore your options! Give yourself plenty of time to plan. We originally were going to try and plan a wedding in less than 6 months, while it can be done, I’m glad we decided to wait a year. I bought my dress before I even picked a wedding date or venue, and I think my dress helped me pick the rest of the pieces. I did lots of research and lots of planning to get my dream wedding. There are options out there for plus size brides! I bought a custom garter set off Etsy because nothing in stores fit me or I didn’t care for anything I found. Because I had it custom made, I was able to have it personalized to my Spider-Man loving husband. Sometimes wedding planning isn’t always a one stop shop or destination, try different places or ask other brides (lots of local bride groups on Facebook). Good luck to you on your planning!
Three adjectives that describe the day: Beautiful, lovely and unique
What has surprised you most during the first few months of marriage? We didn’t live together before we were married so combining all of our stuff, our lives and daily habits proved somewhat challenging. While we had learned to deal with the big things in life together over the years like sickness, surgery, death and job loss, we had to learn how to cope with the little things like who was paying for which bills and who’s doing the dishes and laundry etc. I can definitely say that marriage has strengthened us and helped us to become a better team versus just two separate people. We’ve found that communication is key! Since we are married it is easier to communicate because neither of us is going anywhere, we are committed to each other and our marriage.
