REAL WEDDING | Black, White and Copper Wedding in Maryland | Amanda Sutton Photography

I feel like I’m such a country girl at heart but I’m not really an outside type of girl. I know such a crazy mix but today’s wedding so makes me want to be do an outside event because it’s just fabulous. I just love all the little personal touches and I can’t get over how Scott looks at Brittany. It seems like ever picture with the two of them in it, is just magical. As plus size women, we often think that we will we don’t deserve love and won’t ever be a plus size bride but I tell you, that is so far from the truth. And when you find them it’s truly an EPIC feeling!

Tell us about your wedding: I feel like my wedding was truly a DIY, family event. Weddings are a very personal thing to me, so I tried to incorporate as many personal touches in as many places as I could. I always knew I wanted my wedding to be at the barn on my parent’s property, but I didn’t want it to be a “rustic” theme. I wanted it to be somewhat bold and glamorous. I absolutely love black and white stripes, so I knew I wanted to incorporate those. I thought about different color combinations for a while before deciding I really just wanted a lot of black and white, with lots of greenery and pops of copper accents. The florist totally saw my vision and did a fantastic job working with it; we did bottles on half the tables, and greenery garland on the other half, and the florist created this amazing greenery chandelier for above the dance floor, and the ceremony flowers were just beautiful. I was especially excited about the copper wire she wrapped about the boutonnieres, it was such a great touch. I might be biased, but I thought our wedding party looked AMAZING. When picking the bridesmaids dresses, I just told them to get something floor length and black, other than that they had free reign, and they did a great job. They each looked so gorgeous and glamorous and were able to express their own individual styles. And I don’t think you could find a cuter flower girl than my niece. The groomsmen all requested to wear bowties and suspenders, so we decided to gift them each with monogrammed suspenders and not have them wear jackets so they would be displayed all day, and they all looked so handsome. One of our best friends got ordained and married us, and he was just perfect for it, he did a great job. We had a fairly large guest list, about 200 people, but somehow the whole day managed to feel so intimate, it was just amazing. Wedding Colors: Black, white, copper. How did the two of you meet? We met in our first class on the first day of college at UNCC, we were both studying engineering. We were friends all through college but didn’t start dating until senior year. Describe your engagement: Scott proposed on the beach during a joint family vacation with his family and mine to the Outer Banks in July of 2015. We were taking a walk on the beach, and i turned around and he was down on one knee with the ring inside a seashell. Our families were nearby watching, I had no idea it was coming. Personal or handmade details: In true Pinterest-crafting form, my friends and family collected bottles for months, and we painted them copper to be used as the table centerpieces. My awesome Dad built the dance floor for me because I really wanted checkerboard portable dance floors
, and he also built the ceremony arch. There were so many personal and DIY touches; inside the barn, there were 7 old windows that had been boarded up, so I decided to paint them with chalkboard paint and create moss frames around each one and wrote quotes about love on them. My Dad had salvaged an old mantel from a historic house in the area, and he set it up in the barn and added the shiplap above it for me and I hung tealight candles inside it and one of my bridesmaids made a moss monogram to hang above it. My husband moved to my hometown in MD with me shortly after college graduation, but he is originally from Lincolnton, NC, so we had all of the wine shipped up from a local winery in his hometown, Southern Charm Winery. The koozie wedding favors were displayed in antique crates that actually came from a soda bottling company my Dad’s grandfather used to own. All of the signs (the ceremony program sign, the dessert label/signs) were made by me and my bridesmaids. I designed, printed, and assembled all of the invitations myself. My Dad and I built the Clemson cornhole boards that we used during the reception as a gift for my husband; my Dad built them and I painted them (my husband and his family are huge Clemson fans). I was also very excited to wear my great-grandmother’s ring (the blue topaz) on the day of my wedding. We were extremely close, she was like a second mom to myself and my siblings when we were growing up, so that was my way of remembering her the day of. My husband and I got our Newfie, Loki a couple years ago, and he is like our baby, so he was of course in the wedding. He did a great job, and his bowtie looked very handsome if I do say so. My husband insisted on BBQ for the food, and my uncle volunteered to cook for us, which was no small feat considering the 200 person guest list, but he got up at 4 am that morning to start smoking the BBQ. It was AMAZING. And my grandmother, mom, and a couple of family friends made all the desserts from scratch for us. I could literally go on and on about all the personal details, our family and friends were so involved in the entire process, it meant so much to us and made the day so much more personal and special. Describe your flowers: I love flowers, the floral design was really important to me. Monterey did a fantastic job. My bouquet was a clutch style with a combination of assorted ferns, foliage, eucalyptus, and succulents, with some white garden roses, lisianthus, veronica, and dahlias. She even painted some of the foliage with the same copper paint we used on the bottles so bring the copper color into it. and I was obsessed with the black streaming ribbons around the stems. The bridesmaids bouquets were all greenery, with black and copper streaming ribbons. The boutonnieres were foliage and ferns wrapped in copper wire (I LOVED THIS touch). The ceremony arch was decorated with a garland using the same flowers and greenery that were in my bouquet. They also created 2 floral arrangements for the aisle entry using native grasses and foliage. The centerpieces were a mix of trailing garlands and assorted bottle centerpieces. The garlands were a combination of lemon leaves, eucalyptus, and plumosa fern. The bottles had an individual bloom (either football mums, fuji mums, garden roses, lisianthus, or veronica) with the same kind of greenery. The chandelier over the dance floor was also one of my favorite pieces, a black wrought iron chandelier decorated with fresh moss, hanging green amaranths and other various greenery. Memories an stories about the day: I am usually so tightly wound and anxious, but I just remember being so completely calm the whole day, I wasn’t worried about anything. My husband, usually the calm one, says he was the exact opposite haha. First Dance: First Date by Blink-182 The thing that we would have done differently is? If i had known how fast the night would fly by, I would’ve set the start time to be a lot earlier, haha. Everyone says it flies by so fast, but it really does! I wish we had had more time to enjoy everything and spend time with everyone. Your advice for other plus size brides: When i started planning the wedding, I stressed a lot about creating this “pinterest perfect” event that followed all the current trends and stuff like that, but I (luckily) realized not far into it that that was silly, and once I started planning the wedding that would make myself and my husband happy, it was so much easier and less stressful. Three adjectives that describe the day: Gorgeous, happy, quick. What has surprised you most during the first few months of marriage? Mostly just that it feels the same, I thought it would feel so different being married, but it just feels very natural and easy. And then also I found out we were expecting our first child basically 2 months to the day after our wedding haha. That was quite the happy surprise.
