Friday we did a post on Vera Wang coming out with her Spring 2013 White Collection for David’s Bridal, check the post out here, which is fabulous by the way. We got tons of people commenting and sharing it on our Facebook page and one person brought up a great point. Here is what she said when she shared the following image…
Excuse me? You call this a plus sized bride? Please don’t insult us -size 8 is not a plus size. Show these in size 20 and then we’ll start to believe you
Now, I have to say I was completely shocked when I saw it and then I started to think and realized that it wasn’t shocked at what she said but shocked that it was so true. It is true that there are designer wedding dress companies out there starting to offer their designer wedding gowns in plus sizes but they haven’t starting advertising the gowns on plus size brides. I will say that David’s Bridal is moving in the right direction because I have seen ads on TV that feature a glimpse of a plus size bride in one of the gowns from their plus size collection. And Alfred Angelo does feature plus size models on their website advertising their plus size collections as well.
But ultimately the question is, “Why don’t the designer wedding gown companies feature plus size models in their ads to show off their wedding dress options?” I think it’s because these company’s main audiences are not plus size brides so they don’t really feel they need or should advertise plus size models in their gowns. I know it’s harsh and cruel to think of but honestly, I think it’s the best answer out there. It’s not that they don’t care about us because if they didn’t care about plus size brides then they wouldn’t be trying to offer the same designs in plus sizes. Yes, designer wedding gown companies are slow to start incorporating plus size models into their campaigns and ads but I think we are aways off from that but here at Pretty Pear Bride we are helping to speed that process up by doing shoots with these plus size gowns. {Secret: We have a whole spread of plus size designer wedding gowns in our upcoming Spring Issue} But it is a not something that will happen overnight. The same way it took a while for plus size wedding dress designers to start catering to plus size brides, it will also take a while for them to actually start including us in their campaigns and ads. My suggestion is to keep showing the designers that we as plus size women do want the same options as our smaller counterparts by demanding the inclusion of plus size models in their bridal and wedding campaigns and ad. We need to show them that we will not be brushed under the rug and just go away without a fight.
